BlackRock’s ETHA plans 1-for-3 reverse split to narrow spread costs, Bloomberg ETF analyst says

BlackRock’s spot Ether ETF, iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA), is set to undergo a 1-for-3 reverse split in October, according to a post published on X on Aug. 5 by Bloomberg senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas. He said the move would lift ETHA’s share price from about $14 to roughly $42, cutting the trading spread cost from around 7 basis points to about 2 basis points. Balchunas argued that the move shows how sensitive the ETF industry is to trading friction. In his comparison, ETF issuers see a 7 bps spread as a problem worth fixing, while the all-in cost of converting dollars into crypto on exchanges often runs around 140 bps. When one user challenged that figure and said their cost was 40 bps, Balchunas replied that even 40 bps would still be “crazy” by ETF standards. He also said that when he personally tested buying Bitcoin for research, the best quote he found through exchanges connected to the Ledger app still came with a 150 bps cost. The comparison, as framed in the report, helps explain why spot crypto ETFs have continued to pull retail and institutional capital away from exchanges, especially for investors who only want exposure and do not need onchain functions.
